Following the inaugral Memory Box ‘Social’
at the Horse & Groom earlier this month, the night that delves into the
archives of electronic music, returns for another trip down club culture’s
memory lane with special guest Rennie Pilgrem playing a classic breaks and early
90’s set.
Rennie Pilgrem is quite simply a rave
legend! In 1989 he formed Rhythm Section with DJ Ellis D, Nick Scott and Richie
T. As well as playing at every rave worth mentioning, Rhythm Section released
the huge ‘Comin’ On Strong’ EP which stayed in the Dance Charts for 18 months
and sold over 20,000 copies.
In 1993 Rennie set-up TCR Recordings to
release his own material. An early track on the label ‘A Place Called Acid’ was
an underground anthem which got him internationally recognised as a bonafide
producer/DJ in his own right.
In 1996 he started a night called
‘Friction’ with Ian Williams, Tayo and Adam Freeland. They described their
music policy as ‘Nu School Breaks’ and so gave name to a movement that became
established worldwide.
Rennie’s award-winning career (Best Breaks
single ‘2 Freaks’/Best Remix ‘Emit’ amongst others) in Dance has so far taken
him around the World DJing many times over. As well as releasing over 100
singles on his TCR imprint he has remixed a veritable who’s who of electronic
music….. Afrika Bambaata, Arthur Baker, Ferry Corsten, Timo Maas, Simple Minds,
Filter, BT, Easy Rollers, Elite Force, Meat Katie, Uberzone, Braund Reynolds
and many more.
Pulling out the old gems alongside Rennie
is Memory Box creator, Robin Ball whose passion and knowledge of electronic
music both old and new inspired him to start the Memory Box moniker. In 1988,
when he was first exposed to the acid house phenomenon, he caught the DJ bug
and has been putting on parties, making records and DJing around the globe ever
since.
Memory Box is an offshoot and an antidote
to Robin’s Socialeyes parties which focus on forward thinking electronic dance
music at some of London’s best venues.

Memory Box parties delve deep into the
archives of defining genres over the last 25 years of electronic music. Memory
Box has recently held successful nights at Corsica Studios inviting Tom
Middleton to explore his love of the ‘History of the Roland TR-808 drum
Machine’ and Justin Robertson playing one of his trademark ‘Acid House’
sets. With planning underway for more
nights in the Memory Box series, this summer see’s the more intimate version
with the start of the Memory Box Social at the Horse and Groom, one of
Shoreditch’s most beloved ‘Disco Pubs’.
Digging through his crates for the Memory
Box Social on the 17th August is Jerome Hill. A self confessed sufferer of multiple music
personality disorder he plays it all from Techno through to Hip Hop, Old Skool,
dancehall, funk and has been DJing and collecting records since 1990. Jerome
played his first gig at the legendary Wag club on Wardour Street, then held a
long term residency on infamous London sound system JIBA throughout the
90's. Today Jerome maintains a hectic DJ
schedule. Respected as much for his scratching and mixing skills as for his
track selection, and shunning the image of the modern laptop DJ, Jerome is
Vinyl all the way and loves challenging himself and the crowd on the decks. Be
sure, there'll always be a surprise just around the corner..
Also playing the old gems is Robin Ball

From the birth of Hip Hop and Electro
through Techno, Electronica, Jungle, Rave, Drum and Bass and it's evolution
into Dubstep, Bass House, Footwork and Trap, the Roland TR 808 Kick Drum's
ubiquitous Boom and Thump is without doubt the sound that defines an era of
Bass-centric music more than anything else.
Tom Middleton has a deep rooted love for
this revolutionary instrument and has been busy preparing a DJ set based on the
History of the Roland TR 808 Kick Drum for Memory Box at Corsica Studios on
Saturday 6th July.
Memory Box is a night that delves deep into
the archives of defining genres over the last 25 or so years of electronic
music. So on this very special night, come and get your geek on as Tom
Middleton takes you on a history lesson of one of the most prolific pieces of
studio kit to emerge in the last three decades.
Expect Hip Hop, Electro, Techno, Rave, Jungle, D&B, Dubstep, Trap,
Footwork... it's all about the 808 Kick!'
“I remember hearing and feeling that deep
low end sub bass kicking you in the chest and making your nethers rattle when a
local DJ dropped Run DMC's Peter Piper on a system with 18" Sub woofers
and thinking this is the best thing I'd ever heard!” enthuses Tom.
Filling out the history lesson, Memory Box
creator Robin Ball will be playing his Memory Box set of 90’s house, techno,
beats and breaks from some of his favorite labels like Warp, R&S, Outer
Rhythm, KMS, Transmat and S.U.A.D.
In contrast to this, Socialeyes host room 2
with Wiggle club night and label boss Nathan Coles and Robin Ball supported by
the Isolater DJs playing upfront tech house and techno.
